Kisan Melas have long served as a platform for knowledge-sharing, innovation, and networking among farmers, scientists, and entrepreneurs in India. The 118th All India Kisan Mela at Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, exemplified this tradition under the guidance of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Dr. Manmohan Singh Chauhan. With over 38,000 farmers and 575 stalls, the mela showcased modern technologies, improved seeds, and entrepreneurial initiatives. Remarkably, the event remained rain-free throughout Dr. Chauhan’s tenure, symbolizing faith, diligence, and effective leadership. Women’s contributions were celebrated through the Mahila Club and SHG stalls, promoting gender inclusion in agriculture. With its focus on smart and digital farming, the mela is set to expand into a five-day celebration, further advancing Pantnagar’s transformative impact on Indian agriculture.
A Legacy of Faith and Progress
GBPUA&T, Pantnagar India’s first agricultural university continues to stand tall as a temple of knowledge, innovation, and service to farmers. Every year, its Kisan Mela, organized twice during the Kharif and Rabi seasons, becomes a vibrant confluence of farmers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and innovators from across the country. Farmers travel from distant states to Pantnagar to explore cutting-edge technologies, purchase the renowned Pantnagar seeds, and engage directly with the nation’s leading agricultural experts. Traditionally, the mela has been a four-day celebration, but this year marked the beginning of a new chapter in its glorious history. Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Dr. Manmohan Singh Chauhan, the event reached unprecedented heights of success. With the participation of over 38,000 farmers and the establishment of 575 exhibition stalls from across India, the Kisan Mela became a living symbol of Pantnagar’s expanding influence and agricultural revolution setting the stage for its next milestone: a five-day grand celebration in the coming year.
Grand Inauguration by Hon’ble Governor of Uttarakhand

The 118th All India Kisan Mela and Agricultural Industry Exhibition commenced with grandeur on October 10, 2025, at Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. The air was charged with excitement and anticipation as farmers, scientists, and entrepreneurs gathered to witness the country’s largest confluence of agricultural innovation. The mela was inaugurated and graced by the Hon’ble Governor of Uttarakhand, Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh (Retd.), amidst thunderous applause and vibrant displays of technological and agronomic excellence. The inauguration was further graced by Shri Ganesh Joshi, Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of Uttarakhand, and Shri Ajay Bhatt, Union Minister of State for Defence and Tourism.

In his inaugural address, Hon’ble Governor Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh (Retd.) stated: “Pantnagar University is not only a source of inspiration for the farmers of Uttarakhand but for the entire nation. The research, education, and innovation-driven technologies developed here are guiding farmers toward a progressive future. The agriculture of tomorrow will be ‘smart and digital,’ wherein sensor technology, drones, artificial intelligence, and data analytics will play a vital role in enhancing productivity, reducing costs, and ensuring efficient resource management. The university is doing commendable work in this direction.” Chief Guest Shri Ajay Bhatt, Union Minister of State for Defence and Tourism, said: “Pantnagar University serves as a beacon of inspiration for farmers across the country. Its technological achievements and research contributions play a crucial role in empowering farmers and making them self-reliant. Farmers are the backbone of realizing the Prime Minister’s vision of an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India).” Agriculture Minister Shri Ganesh Joshi stated: “The state government is continuously striving to double farmers’ income. Our goal is to ensure that the technologies and seeds developed by Pantnagar scientists reach every farmer in the state. Such fairs serve as strong platforms for interaction between farmers and scientists.” Books were also released on this occasion.
Hon’ble Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami Participates in 118th All India Kisan Mela at Pantnagar University

Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami, participated in the 118th All India Kisan Mela and Agricultural Industry Exhibition held at Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUA&T), Pantnagar on 12th Oct 2025. During the event, the Chief Minister inaugurated new pulse varieties developed by the university and released the university’s publication, Pantnagar Pravah. Addressing the Silver Jubilee Statehood Symposium and Dialogue Program held as part of the mela, the Chief Minister highlighted that such agricultural fairs not only allow farmers to access the latest technologies, improved seeds, modern equipment, and recent research at a single platform but also provide an opportunity to learn from experts and share their own experiences. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the modern technologies and innovations showcased at the mela will enable farmers to integrate traditional practices with new scientific methods, making agriculture more productive, sustainable, and profitable. Shri Dhami further stated that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India is rapidly progressing toward the goal of becoming a developed nation. He highlighted two major initiatives launched by the Prime Minister to support farmers: the PM Dhan Dhanay Agricultural Scheme with an allocation of ₹24,000 crore, and the Pulses Productivity Mission with a budget of approximately ₹11,500 crore to promote pulse cultivation.

He added that the Uttarakhand state government, under the guidance of the Prime Minister, is continuously working to improve the welfare and prosperity of farmers in the state. Notable initiatives include providing free irrigation through canals and allocating ₹200 crore for the construction of polyhouses to increase agricultural produ ctivity. So far, approximately 350 polyhouses have been constructed in the state with financial support of around ₹115 crore. The Chief Minister also mentioned that the state government is providing grants to establish grading and sorting units to improve the quality of farmers’ produce. Shri Dhami further stated that the event was also an opportunity to discuss important social and legal topics, including the Anti-Copying Law and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The Chief Minister emphasized that the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the state is a historic step to ensure equal rights and laws for all citizens. He clarified that UCC is not against any religion or faith but is a constitutional measure aimed at eliminating social malpractices and promoting equality and harmony among all citizens. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Manmohan Singh Chauhan expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for implementing UCC and the Anti-Copying Law. The program was attended by prominent dignitaries, including MLA Shri Shiv Arora, Shri Trilok Singh Cheema, Shri Suresh Garia, former MLA Shri Rajesh Shukla, District Magistrate Shri Nitin Singh Bhadoria, Senior Superintendent of Police Shri Manikant Mishra, and other district-level officials.

He emphasized the importance of smart and digital agriculture, where tools such as sensors, drones, artificial intelligence, and data analytics can revolutionize productivity while ensuring sustainability.
“Pantnagar University is not just Uttarakhand’s pride; it is a guiding light for farmers across India. Its research, education, and innovations consistently provide direction to the nation’s agriculture,” the Governor remarked. He applauded the mela’s theme, “Smart and Digital Agriculture for Farmers’ Development,” and praised the University for Successfully bridging the gap between scientific research and practical farming.

Honoring the women of various SHGs, the Mahila Club was celebrated on a prominent platform during the Kisan Mela, sending a strong message of empowerment. This recognition instills pride, builds confidence, and motivates more women to take bold strides in agriculture, entrepreneurship, and allied sectors. By highlighting their contributions, the university showcases its commitment to promoting gender equality and creating opportunities for women to lead, innovate, and actively participate in the growth of rural communities. The presence of Mahila Club stalls, Various SHGs stalls and the acknowledgment of their efforts reflects a tangible step toward accelerating women’s empowerment in every sphere of farming and allied industries.

Another remarkable quality of Vice-Chancellor Dr. Manmohan Singh Chauhan is his hands-on approach during the Kisan Mela. He personally visits over 500 exhibition stalls, listens attentively to participants, provides suggestions, and engages with students to understand their innovative models. By motivating them to refine their ideas and implement these models in villages, he inspires both students and farmers alike. This active participation not only encourages practical application of research but also exemplifies the qualities of a true, effective leader who bridges the gap between innovation and its real-world impact.

Another remarkable initiative under Vice-Chancellor Dr. Manmohan Singh Chauhan is the introduction of an Animal Husbandry component at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK). For the first time, farmers are receiving comprehensive training not only in crop cultivation but also in animal husbandry and other allied sectors—areas that were previously less emphasized. This proactive approach has transformed the KVK into an active hub of practical knowledge and skill development, empowering farmers with diversified expertise and enhancing overall rural livelihoods.
